Excavation with a flat shovel (top left) or mason's trowel removes soil gradually, allowing the archaeologist to spot any shift in color or texture, or the presence of manmade features. Soil from the test unit is heaved into the sifting screen (top right) while the archaeologist on the right searches through her screen for artifacts. Once excavation is completed, measured drawings are made of the soil strata visible in the test unit wall. One archaeologist reads soil depths to her partner, who sketches the profile on graph paper.
