| The mended jug is a ceramic type called whiteware, common on sites dating to the mid-1800s. This Lea and Perrins Worcestershire sauce bottle closely resembles the ones still produced today. In a process called flotation (below), bags of soil from Feature 8 are washed through fine screens until the small sample (bottom) remains. This material is then carefully examined for seeds and pollen that might tell us about food consumption or surrounding vegetation. | |
