My wife and I had the pleasure of visiting Weston Manor this past Sunday. I was quite impressed with the staff on duty that day and our guide... forgive me, I can only remember the letter "A" from her name...was informative and professional.
We visited many other sites while in VA and were often disappointed because the buildings were nearly, if not altogether, complete reconstructions/replicas. Weston is largley intact, as one might have found it in days long gone. Most of the structure is the original material. Unlike many of the other venues, Weston guides will show the entire structure, not just one or two rooms.
The "Evolution of Death" exhibit was a bit of a distraction, but I would still recommend this location to anyone wishing to visit historic sites in this area.
Thanks again to the staff at Weston for making us feel welcome.

Parham at Bailey Creek site (Reply)
Regarding your recovery of artifacts to establish occupation of the Bailey's Creek water treatment site during the "Tobacco Boom," check out watkinsfhs.net/cgi-bin/igm2/igmget.cgi/n=marti?I0919
where you can discover that James Parham born 1598 in England purchased the Baily Creek site in 1655 and named it "High Peake" after the high sandy area with swamp around it. That was probably his Dutch pipe you dug up. My ancestor James Parham married Frances Holmes in England and then emigrated to Lawnes Creek Settlement, Surry County, Virginia. He must have made his move between 1622 and 1625, since the Lawnes Creek settlement was completely wiped out by malaria during the first year of settlement in 1622 and James Parham's son Matthew was born there in 1625. The merchants who had funded the Lawnes Creek land were under the gun to repopulate it or lose their land grants. *** The people who made that website can probably give you their documentation by email. Thanks for your posting your description of the current condition of High Peake online. I copy / pasted it to keep for my grandchildren. -- Sara

Interesting.
Jim Parham
If you Google James Parham you get a lot of references to my son, from Cal Berkeley.

Good example of North American archaeology (Reply)
This is a nice example of North American archaeological research -- good to see. I am a grad student working on the Old Copper Complex of the Midwest, analyzing native copper with an electron microprobe, which is useful for analyzing all sorts of archaeological and geological materials.

Info request (Reply)
Hello:
I would like some information about what has been called the "Hopewell Massacre." Specifically, a long time ago some Allen family members shot up the courthouse because of the outcome of a case involving one of their own. I understand that some people were killed and that some Allens were sent to prison. Please give me all the information you can about this historic event.
Thanks,

Weston Manor (Reply)
Was fun looking at old pictures of Weston Manor. My grandmother lived there approximately 15 years. I spent a majority of my childhood in that home. It brought back great memories to see the pictures. Especially the staircase.

Gilliam Family Slaves (Reply)
I have no idea if this Gilliam family is connected to the Gilliams' that my ancestors served. I found this site while looking for Gilliam data. Robert C. Gilliam left Virginia and moved to SW Arkansas in the 1830's, he may have taken slaves with him? My ancestor Bob Gilliam served as Robert's personal servant, and was with him when he was killed during the Civil War. The Arkansas Gilliams were not "mega" slave holders, indicating that the servants may have been of one family---or that older ones traveled to Arkansas from Virginia with Robert C. and his brothers.

Kindest Attention:Please Respond
My name is Mr. Boulos Kasstrup, a Portuguese. I have been diagnosed with esophageal cancer. It has defiled all forms of medical treatment, and right now I have only about a few months to live, according to medical experts.
As my faith lays on the edge now, I have willed and given most of my properties and assets to my immediate and extended family members as well as few close friends. I have decided to give alms to charity organizations and those in need. I want this to be one of the last good deeds I do on earth. So far, I have distributed money to some charity organizations when I was well. Now that my health has deteriorated so badly, I cannot do this myself anymore. I once asked members of my family to close one of my accounts and distribute the money which I have there to charity organization in United States, Asia, Middle East and Europe; they refused and kept the money to themselves.
Hence, I do not trust them anymore, as they seem not to be contended with what I have left for them. The last of my money which no one knows of is the huge cash deposit of Eighteen Million United States Dollars (US$18, 000, 000.00) that I have with a bank in the United Kingdom (UK). I will want you to help me to withdraw this deposit and dispatch it to charity organizations and use it to help those in need.
N/B: Kindly note that 30% of this funds must go to victims of Tsunami, Hurricane Katrina, South Asia Earthquake, 50% to other Charity Organizations around the World and 20% for your effort and time.

IT WILL ALWAYS BE HOME (Reply)
I grew up in the Prince George-Hopewell area and moved when i got married in 1981. Now I am in Georgia, but Virginia will always be home to me. I visited the first week of November and brought my oldest daughter to show her my "old stomping grounds" with much trepidation that it would be changed to the point of unrecognition. Happily, there have been many changes but it's still the hometown i left behind. Hope to visit again next summer. My stepdad lived in City Point and I find this website facinating. I HAVE ALWAYS BEEN INTERESTED (Reply)
I HAVE ALWAYS BEEN INTERESTED IN HISTORY, VIRGINIA IN PARTICULAR. THIS STUDY HAS MORE VALUE TO ME DUE TO THE FACT THAT CITY POINT WAS NEVER REALLY MENTIONED IN HISTORY CLASSES. YOU DID AN EXCELLANT JOB BRINGING TOGETHER AND ORGANIZING ALL THE INFORMATION IN AN EASY TO FOLLOW FORMAT. ALTHOUGH I AM 1500 MILES AWAY I LIKE TO KEEP UP WITH WHATS GOING ON BACK HOME. THIS SITE KEEPS ME INFORMED. THANK YOU FOR MAKING IT AVAILABLE.

I grew up in Hopewell. It makes me very proud to see that it is finally getting the historical recognition that it deserves. My Grandfather, Thomas Beauchamp, owned several buildings in the City Point Area. The fact that it is now of archiological significance is fascinating!!

Hopewell Archaeology (Reply)
Hopewell Archaeology I used to be a Burchett. I wrote to the Archaeology Dig in Hopewell telling them that when I was a child, a bunch of the neighboring kids would find Indian arrowheads in my front yard. I lived at 1107 Burnside St. I've been watching the "Dig " progress on my computer. Very interesting! Please inform me if there are any other "finds", I'm so interested in the outcome. Thanks! Enjoyed meeting the wonderful W&M archeology field research staff (Reply)
I enjoyed meeting the wonderful W&M archeology field research staff and participating in the dig in September. I also look forward to volunteering at Weston Manor on October 29th. What fun and excitement. The enthusiasm of the archeologists is contagious and the opportunity to gain knowledge about techniques and equipment used and to understand more about history through artifacts is a great opportunity. I have an entirely different perspective now as view the soil and its historical contents

Very interesting and important (Reply)
HERBERT H. BRAGG I find this site to be very interesting and important because it compliments the history that have already been captured. In addition, it is well organized and very promising. To those involved in the process, I say continue to keep up the great work. History tells a story and it serves as an important reminder to us just how far we have come and where we need to go. Many thanks to the Hopewell City Council for their vision to move forward with this project and to the staff of the college of William and Mary for their steadfast dedication to see it through. Sincerely, Herbert H. Bragg Public Information/Research Officer City of Hopewell
