William &Mary's Undergraduate Science Education and Research Program, sponsored by the Howard Hughes Medical Institute Undergraduate Biological Sciences Education Program, will fund 20 Summer Research Fellowships this summer. Participants must engage in 10 weeks of full-time research in biology or related fields (broadly defined). The research must be designed by the participant and a sponsoring faculty member and be conducted at the College of William &Mary or VIMS; it is expected that the research will eventually result in publication and/or presentation. Funds are available to rising sophomores, juniors, and seniors; exceptional projects from graduating seniors will also be considered. The fellowship will carry a stipend of $3,600; free campus housing will also be provided. • A letter from the sponsoring faculty member is also required.
  • Please inform the faculty member with whom the research will be conducted that a reference letter is required and will be requested immediately after the application is submitted. Along with support for the project and the student, this letter should indicate how long the faculty member has known the student and an evaluation of the student's future plans and potential for research.

Applications will be evaluated on the basis of academic standing, the clarity and scientific merit of the project proposal, the potential for the project to contribute to a future publication or presentation, and whether the student will continue to be involved in the project beyond the summer.

Students who accept an HHMI Summer Research Fellowship must devote a minimum of 10 weeks (40 hours per week) to the project. Additional funding from other sources may not be accepted for the same project.
